Aviation Weekly #18 – Huge Growth Global Drone Market, Commercial Pilot Shortage, Dubai Airshow, AT&T Flying COW
1. The global commercial drones market is expected to grow from US$0.755 billion in 2017 to US$2.034 billion in 2022, according to a press release from http://www.researchandmarkets.com.
“Drones…are used for surveillance, photography, forest fire monitoring, soil moisture imaging, flood mapping and other applications. The market for commercial drones is majorly driven by the relaxation of the regulatory policies for the use of drones,” the press release said.
It goes on to say that, “Growing adoption of drones for law enforcement is also boosting the demand for commercial drones as these devices can transfer high-resolution images and videos and other surveillance data in real time to base stations.”
“The demand for commercial drones is also augmenting due to their increased use by the governments for infrastructure, R&D activities, environmental studies, and disaster management activities”. 2. Private suites with sliding doors, the future of the Airbus A380 superjumbo in doubt, and business is booming for Boeing.
These are just three of the seven things we learned about aviation as the Dubai Airshow ended this week, according to an article by Soo Kim in The Daily Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/dubai-airshow-highlights/)
Emirates has designed First Class cabins than were inspired by NASA as part of a multimillion dollar upgrade across its entire fleet of Boeing 777s.
Meanwhile, Airbus was eagerly awaiting a lifeline order of up to 38 updated A380 superjumbos from Emirates, but the UAE carrier announced that it was instead buying 40 of Boeing’s 787-10 Dreamliners. This must have been a shock to Airbus and has put the future of the A380 in doubt.
However, Airbus can take comfort in the fact that they received a massive order of 430 A320neos from US based private equity group Indigo Partners.
Another thing we learned (or were reminded of) is the fact that the UAE Space Agency wants to build gardens on Mars. To this end it has allocated £4.1billion of funds for a project that could one day see food grown under domes on the Martian surface.
3. As mentioned in a previous Aviation Weekly, the aviation industry is showing signs of a shortage of commercial pilots. A report published by Boeing earlier this year predicts that the aviation industry will need 617,000 new commercial airline pilots, 679,000 new maintenance technicians and 814,000 new cabin crew over the next 20 years.
This presents a fantastic opportunity to anyone considering a career in commercial aviation. There has never been a better time to learn to fly, train as an aerospace engineer or as a member of the cabin crew.
The pilot shortage also presents opportunities for existing pilots. Airlines are offering increased salaries and retention bonuses to keep current pilots in the cockpit.
However, although these opportunities exist in the major airlines it’s a different story among smaller, regional carriers, particularly in North America. Things are improving there too but not at the same pace as the larger carriers.
If you’re considering learning to fly then check out the other videos in my channel on this subject. Watch “How To Become A Commercial Airline Pilot. How To Start A Career In Aviation By Learning To Fly” and others in the same playlist.
4. The FAA has given its approval for an AT&T drone equipped with LTE radios and antennas to help with the restoration of Puerto Rico’s communications network. The drone, dubbed the Flying COW (Cell On Wings) will provide temporary voice, data, and internet service.
