Lee Flying Association, Solent Airport, Royal Navy Air Station Lee-on-Solent (HMS Daedalus)
Lee Flying Association (LFA) is a not-for-profit members organisation that works to ensure the retention of Solent Airport for public aviation and community uses.
And you can be part of this association and enjoy the many benefits of membership.
Whether you’re a pilot, aircraft owner, or someone who is just interested in aviation or even just the history of the airfield you are welcome to join the LFA.
First, a brief description of the home airfield.
Solent Airport, formerly Royal Naval Air Station Lee-on-Solent (HMS Daedalus), is fast becoming a busy General Aviation airfield.
It is a CAA Licensed Aerodrome with a recently resurfaced asphalt runway, 05/23.
Facilities include aircraft refueling, on-site engineering, hangarage, outdoor parking, along with flying tuition and flight experiences.
There is a viewing area for aviation enthusiasts with a play area for children, adjacent to the Cafe at 05 which serves refreshments seven days a week.
The location of this historic airfield draws visiting pilots from both the UK and abroad, and the variety of aircraft attracts numerous aviation enthusiasts.
As well as modern aircraft, microlights, helicopters and gyrocopters you can often see vintage aircraft in the form of Tiger Moths, Beech Staggerwings, and Spitfires.
During 2018 the Boultbee Flight Academy, based at Goodwood Airfield several miles away, positioned Spitfires at Solent Airport in order to make use of the airfield’s hard runway.
But it hasn’t always been this way.
A few years ago the airfield was in grave danger of being permanently closed to General Aviation.
The Lee Flying Association was instrumental in securing the future of the airfield for both public and commercial traffic.
It has provided input and representation to Fareham Borough Council who now own the airfield.
It has liaised with the Civil Aviation Authority and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association on matters relating to Solent Airport.
It not only lobbied to keep the airfield open but continues to promote aviation by organising events that both entertain and inform visitors about the airfield’s heritage.
For example, in 2014 the LFA and its partners created a unique event entitled Daedalus D-Day 70th to commemorate the important role the airfield played in the build up to D-Day itself.
No less than eight Douglas Dakotas took part, along with flypasts by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster, a Spitfire, and a Sea Fury.
As well as social activities at the airfield itself the LFA organises visits for members to aviation museums, aero parks, and other sites of interest.
The Lee Flying Association welcomes new members.
The more members who join, the stronger the association’s voice becomes when speaking up for General Aviation.
As a member, you can make use of the LFA clubhouse alongside the Control Tower. There you’ll find a comfortable location for flight planning or simply socialising with other members.
You’ll receive updates on the LFA activities via the newsletters and Facebook group.
You will have a voice, and you will be able to put forward your views to an association that curates the opinions of its members and presents them to various bodies.
Membership costs just £30 a year.
You can find out more and apply for your membership at the LFA website: http://www.eghf.co.uk
Or simply email the Chairman at [email protected]
Join the LFA and be part of the ongoing aviation success story at Solent Airport.
