Aviation Writing by a Pilot Who Writes, Not a Writer Who Googles

There is a simple test for aviation writing: could the author pass a conversation in a flying club bar? Much of the aviation content published online today could not. It reads correctly enough at a glance, but a pilot spots the gaps within a paragraph. The terminology is slightly off, the procedures are described secondhand, and the feel of actually flying an aeroplane is missing entirely.

I write from the other side of that divide. I have held a UK Private Pilot Licence since 1991, I hold a Diploma in Aviation Studies from Farnborough Technology College, and I have been publishing aviation content online for about 20 years. When I write about crosswind landings, weight and balance, NOTAMs or the peculiar joy of an early morning flight from a grass strip, I am writing from memory, not from research alone.

If you need aviation content that your readers will trust, whether that is a commissioned feature, a regular blog series, or social media content for an aviation brand, this page explains what I do and why it works.

Flying credentials that inform every article

I gained my Private Pilot Licence in 1991 and have flown a variety of aircraft under instruction, including the Extra 300, the Scottish Aviation Bulldog, and the Harvard T-6. That range matters. Aerobatic types, military trainers and touring aircraft each teach you something different about handling, airmanship and the culture around them, and all of it feeds into the writing.

Formal training sits underneath the flying. My diploma in Aviation Studies from Farnborough Technology College gave me a grounding in the theory of the industry, not just the practice of flying, and it means I am as comfortable writing about the commercial and technical side of aviation as I am about stick and rudder skills.

I also completed the required training and exams and gained a PfAW (Permission for Aerial Work) issued by the CAA in 2014. Uncrewed aviation is one of the fastest growing areas of the industry, and it is an area where accurate, regulation-aware writing is in short supply. I can write about airspace, drone regulations and commercial drone operations from the position of someone who has been through the CAA’s requirements personally, not someone summarising them from a government webpage.

Published work for respected aviation outlets

Editors have commissioned and paid for my work at outlets across the aviation media, including:

  • AvBuyer, the business aviation marketplace and magazine
  • Key Aero, the aviation portal from Key Publishing
  • Air Facts Journal, the long-running American journal of general aviation
  • Pilot Institute, the flight training and drone education provider
  • Redbird Flight, the flight simulation and training technology company

Those commissions span general aviation, flight training, business aviation and drone operations. They also span two audiences that require very different registers: pilots who will catch any technical slip, and aspiring aviators who need complex subjects explained clearly without being patronised. Writing well for both is a skill in itself.

An audience built over decades

Writing is only half of what I offer. The other half is an understanding of aviation audiences that comes from building one myself.

I founded and run the Student Pilot Community, a Facebook group of more than 69,000 members, supported by an email newsletter with 5,800 subscribers. Every day I see which aviation topics generate discussion, which questions student pilots ask again and again, and which content formats actually get read rather than scrolled past. That knowledge shapes everything I write for clients. It is the difference between content that fills a page and content that gets shared in pilot forums and WhatsApp groups.

For brands, that community experience translates directly into social media content generation. I know how to write aviation posts that sound like they come from inside the hangar, because they do.

A verifiable track record

I would encourage you to check my footprint for yourself. Google “ben lovegrove aviation” and you will find plenty of evidence of my online aviation presence built up over many years: articles, community work, videos and content across the web. In an era when anyone can claim expertise, and when a growing amount of aviation content is generated by people (and tools) with no aviation background at all, a long, public, searchable history in the subject is worth a great deal.

My professional life outside aviation reinforces the same point. I have spent more than 30 years as a senior network engineer working on critical national infrastructure, a career that demands precision, clear documentation and zero tolerance for vagueness. I bring the same discipline to writing: facts checked, terminology exact, deadlines met.

What I can write for you

Commissioned features and articles. Long-form pieces on general aviation, flight training, business aviation, drone operations, aviation history and airshows, written to your brief and house style.

Regular blog content. Ongoing series for flight schools, aviation retailers, training providers, drone businesses and aviation SaaS companies that need a steady flow of credible, search-friendly content.

Social media content generation. Post series, captions and content calendars for aviation brands that want a voice their audience recognises as authentic.

Educational and training content. Clear explanations of complex subjects for student pilots and drone operators, informed by years of answering exactly these questions in the Student Pilot Community.

Newsletter and email content. I write and publish my own aviation newsletters, so I understand open rates, subject lines and the rhythm of email audiences from practical experience.

Why commission a pilot-writer

Anyone can assemble an article about aviation. The value I offer is in the details that cannot be researched quickly: knowing what a Bulldog feels like compared with an Extra 300, remembering what confused me as a student pilot in the early 1990s and recognising the same confusion in student pilots today, understanding why a NOTAM matters and how a pilot actually reads one, and having sat on both sides of the CAA’s paperwork as a pilot and as a commercial drone operator.

Readers sense authenticity even when they cannot name it. Aviation audiences, more than most, reward it with trust, and trust is what turns content into customers for the businesses that publish it.

Let’s discuss your project

If you need aviation writing with real flying experience behind it, I would be glad to hear from you. I take on:

  • Writing commissions for magazines, websites and content platforms
  • Blog and article series for aviation businesses
  • Social media content generation for aviation brands

Get in touch via the contact page and tell me what you have in mind. Whether it is a single feature or an ongoing content partnership, the first conversation costs nothing and I will give you an honest view of whether I am the right fit.

Ben Lovegrove wrote a feature for Pilot Institute, ‘The Psychological Aspects of Flying.’ He delivered on time,
the piece needed very little from us, and I’d work with him again.
